Let’s face it – few of us like the word ‘committee’. We like to think of them as ‘teams’. Regardless, a number of volunteer teams conducts key operations vital to the smooth functioning of Habitat's important work. If you are interested in joining any of the following groups, please call or email us and we will put you in contact with the Chair.
Teams
Faith Relations
One of Habitat’s most valued partners is the faith community. This committee expands and nurtures the mutually beneficial partnerships with the faith community. Develops systems and procedures to recruit, retain and recognize the many volunteers who make Habitat happen every day. Hosts annual events, such as the Day of Prayer in September and Faith Builds. We are currently seeking volunteers from the faith community to serve as liaisons between the various congregations and Plainfield Habitat. If you would like to represent your congregation, please e-mail us.
Construction
Develops construction plans, oversees implementation, researches acquisition of construction materials and coordinates worksite schedule. Works with the property acquisition committee to define the type of construction that best fits the needs of the community and Habitat’s goals. They oversee the entire worksite, including volunteer management. Looking for skilled volunteers to lead unskilled workers in all phases of construction. We specifically need crew leaders, site supervisors and material donors for our current projects.
Resource Development
Prepares grant applications and develops partnerships with foundations, banks and other businesses. Recruits new supporters through presentations to potential partners including volunteer organizations, local businesses, and trade associations. Assists the board and staff with annual fund development by planning and building relationships with donors for either cash or "in-kind” gifts of material, labor, property or support. Volunteers plan special fundraising events and lead specific tasks, such as donations of raffle items, arranging entertainment or planning site logistics.
Family Selection/Support
Carries out the board’s vision by defining the population in need of decent, affordable housing, and by developing and implementing processes and policies for selecting those in greatest need. Handles the application and selection process which includes home visits and interviews. Once the homeowners are selected, a family partner is assigned a Family Advocate from this committee, and workshops are scheduled to prepare the families for home ownership. Members also establish tools and procedures for training and supporting partner families in the homeownership process including sweat equity.
Property Acquisition
Locates and assesses building sites. The purpose of this team is to generate property leads. This includes working with city offices, neighborhood associations and property owners. Property location and acquisition is the greatest challenge facing Plainfield Habitat. We need your help to identify potential Habitat sites. We appreciate referrals from the community on potential sites that are either abandoned, run-down or vacant.
Community Relations
Oversees and supports all affiliate public relations, which includes developing an annual marketing plan, publications, advertising for special events and public speaking. Prepares newsletters, promotional materials, and press releases; oversees web site design and content; and develops annual strategic community relations plan, supporting all the other teams’ activities. Generates awareness by staffing tables at local street fairs and trade shows. Through creative interaction harnessing emerging technologies, this committee inspires the community to "own” our affiliate and use it as a force for change, eliminating substandard housing in Greater Plainfield. We are always in need of printing services. If you can provide donated or discounted printing services, please contact us.
